At Spoons Across America®, we believe the best approach to good nutrition is to encourage children to lift up their spoons, excite all their senses, and taste new healthy foods. Our programs actively engage children to use all of their senses through hands-on experience and direct observation ‒ appearance, texture, scent, and taste. Through our programs, children become independent and inquisitive taste-explorers.
Spoons Across America® strives to improve children’s relationship with food and help them understand the long-term benefits of healthy eating. Through our nutrition-based programs, children develop a healthy food curiosity that has a lasting impact throughout their lives.
Spoons Across America’s comprehensive and progressive approach to food and nutrition education in public schools begins in the 1st grade and continues through 5th grade. Children participating in our programs have educational experiences around food, tasting, nutrition and health that are developmentally appropriate and build upon previous concepts and experiences. All our programs are hands on and exploratory based, as well as including opportunities for writing and drawing, and contain take home materials for families with recipes, related activities, and opportunities for further discovery.
Our Food Literacy Programs
Spoons Food Explorers: Spoons Across America’s food and literacy curriculum begins in the 1st grade where children actively explore a variety of fresh, healthy foods using all their senses: sight, smell, touch, hearing, and of course taste! Children fill out their “Food Passports” as they follow a “sensory map” on their healthy food adventure.
Farm to Book® : Spoons Across America’s curriculum continues in the 2nd grade with Farm to Book®. This program, taught monthly for the entire school year, gives children the opportunity to further explore new and unfamiliar tastes. They also learn about the source of their food – how it is produced, grown, and transported from farm to table. Children’s literature is used to makes these concepts accessible and fun for young children.
Take a Taste with Spoons: After children, have participated in Farm to Book and experienced a year-long exploration of food origins and taste, they are ready for Take a Taste with Spoons. Building upon the themes of exploration and discovery established in Farm to Book, this 3-week residency for 3rd graders gives children the opportunity to delve deeper into the discovery of taste, develop increased vocabulary around food and flavor, learn more specific information about nutrition and healthy choices, and make some simple recipes.
Spoons Recipe Days: “Graduates” of our 3rd grade program, Take a Taste with Spoons, continue their learning and exploration of food and healthy eating in Spoons Recipe Days, a year-long program for 4th graders. Each monthly session focuses upon a selected theme and recipe that encourages children to explore, prepare and taste healthy foods. Children use their food discovery skills and developing food curiosity, honed in our 2nd and 3rd grade programs, to explore more complex flavors, recipes, and concepts.
The Dinner Party Project® : After completing 4 years of Spoons Across America’s programming, 5th grade children are ready for The Dinner Party Project®. These children are responsible for planning, preparing, and hosting a multi-course dinner for their families in the school cafeteria. Over the course of 8 weekly consecutive sessions, children further explore taste concepts, expand their understanding of nutrition, the difference between a “diet” and a “healthy diet.”, food safety, meal-planning, and cooking.
Since our founding in 2001, Spoons Across America® has developed a holistic nutrition-based curriculum, for 1st through 5th grades, to ensure that children are empowered to make healthy eating choices. Today, our programs, Spoons Food Explorers, Farm to Book®, Take a Taste with Spoons, Spoons Recipe Days, The Dinner Party Project®, and Spoons Summer Recipe Days, awaken and inspire a lifelong passion in children to explore smarter, more nutritious, and more diverse food choices. We are dedicated to improving children’s relationship with food so that they may enjoy the benefits of healthier bodies, healthier lives, healthier families, and healthier communities.
